PIM Update - Action Required!

Later this year Research In Motion will be releasing the v4.2 API set and with this release comes the removal of the old PIM package (net.rim.blackberry.api.pim). This PIM package was released in the 3.6 version of the API and then deprecated in the 4.0 release due to the inclusion of JSR-75 PDAP (javax.microedition.pim).

With the removal of the net.rim.blackberry.api.pim package, any applications that utilize the classes and interfaces in that package will no longer be able to run on the BlackBerry device. Developers are required to modify their applications to use the new JSR package to keep their PIM-based applications running. The change requires modifying the import statement.

For Example:

  • Old PIM package:
    import net.rim.blackberry.api.pim.*;
  • New PIM package:
    import javax.microedition.pim.*;

The net.rim.blackberry.api.pim package, when released, was based on the JSR-75 specification. Other changes to the source code should not be required due to the structure being followed. For information about the PIM API, please see the Java Documentation in the javax.microedition.pim package.

RIM has always been dedicated to efficiency and optimization when it comes to its OS which is the main reason for the removal of the older PIM package. Removal of this package eliminates the redundancy and also reduces the overall footprint of the device's handheld software.
