Got a development question on your mind? Consult the Guru. Selected questions and Guru's replies will be featured in each newsletter, so stay tuned!
Running on AutoPilot asks: We have written an auto run application which runs in the background. In some cases we want to restart the application. Can you suggest a way to restart application?
Guru goes into overdrive:
Well yes, I can. If you device is Java™-based you certainly can do a restart. A Java application for a BlackBerry device is able to shut down and restart itself. Prior to exiting, the application should stop all threads and free up resources. View the code.

In this edition, get Tips for using the Theme Builder and Composer tools in the Plazmic CDK.
Theme Builder:
To make the most out of Theme Builder, ensure your resources are optimized! For example, create images as png files and make sure their sizes meet the recommended height and width as much as possible. Although Theme Builder will perform the appropriate conversion and scaling operations for you, this will increase the overall size of the theme file and can affect performance on the device.
For more tips on how to create optimized resources for your themes, refer to the Plazmic Theme Builder for BlackBerry User Guide in the documentation folder where you installed the CDK.
Composer:
It’s easy to import an animated GIF file in Composer! Each frame of the GIF becomes a frame in the animation timeline.
