You can load applications onto a BlackBerry smartphone
using one of the following methods:
- BlackBerry® Desktop Manager and a USB connection
- a browser on the BlackBerry smartphone and a connection
to the wireless network
- a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server and a connection to the
wireless network
- BlackBerry Application Web Loader and a USB connection
- the JavaLoader.exe utility and a USB connection
For each method you must specify the location of the COD application
file(s) to be loaded.
The following list provides a brief summary of the methods
available to install applications on a BlackBerry smartphone. Detailed
information on these loading methods can be found in Deploying
Java Applications.
Loading applications using BlackBerry Desktop Manager
and a USB connection
Loading applications using BlackBerry Desktop Manager is the
preferred method. This method requires an ALX loading
configuration file.
Loading applications using a browser on the BlackBerry
smartphone and a connection to the wireless network
Applications can be loaded over the wireless network using
the BlackBerry® Browser, Internet Browser, or Wireless Application
Protocol (WAP) Browser. For descriptions of these browsers, see KB03892.
- Put the JAD file and required COD files
on a web server.
- Access the JAD file using a browser on the
BlackBerry smartphone.
Note: Some service providers restrict the sizes of files that can
be downloaded using their WAP Browser.
Loading applications using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server
and a connection to the wireless network
Applications can be pushed over the wireless network from
a BlackBerry Enterprise Server to any BlackBerry smartphone on the
server. The steps to perform this push can be found in the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server Administration Guide or KB03748.
Loading applications using BlackBerry Application Web
Loader and a USB connection
The BlackBerry Application Web Loader allows a web server
to host a BlackBerry application that a user can download using
a USB connection. The user opens the application installation page
in Windows® Internet Explorer®, which is able to load the application
onto a BlackBerry smartphone connected to the computer using a USB connection.
Loading applications using the JavaLoader.exe utility
and a USB connection
For development and testing purposes, applications can be
loaded directly on the BlackBerry smartphone using the JavaLoader.exe utility
provided with the BlackBerry JDE.
