Compaq Simplifies Wireless Access to Business Networks and the Internet

New Handheld Devices and Solutions Provide End-to-End Connectivity Anytime, Anywhere

New Orleans, LA - Aiming to provide simple wireless access to corporate networks and the Internet via handheld devices, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today unveiled a new partnership with Research In Motion Limited (Nasdaq: RIMM) for wireless email, as well as the Aero Wireless Connectivity Suite for the Compaq Aero family of palm-size PCs. Compaq is exhibiting a variety of products at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association's (CTIA) Wireless 2000 conference in New Orleans.

Compaq's unique position in the wireless Internet market comes from its ability to put together integrated solutions that are designed and optimized for the whole system, as well as each individual piece. Compaq is the only vendor capable of delivering a true end-to-end wireless Internet solution, providing everything from the highest performing industry standard server platforms to pocket-sized PCs, allowing customers to be in constant connection - to their email, to their data, to the Internet - anytime, anywhere. These two announcements solidify Compaq's commitment to offer a continuum of devices and solutions to meet diverse customers needs.

The BlackBerry™ Mobile Email Solution

Among various Compaq announcements being made at the conference, Compaq today announced a long-term partnership with RIM, plus a distribution agreement for RIM's BlackBerry Mobile Email Solution. The BlackBerry solution includes a wearable device about the size of a pager, and provides customers with an award-winning, end-to-end solution for mobile professionals wishing to easily access email from Microsoft Exchange-based corporate messaging networks.

"Customers tell us they want to adapt their Microsoft Exchange messaging infrastructure to meet the evolving requirements of their computer users who need more flexible access to email," said Ray Villareal, Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Marketing and Solutions, Compaq Computer Corporation. "By adding RIM technology to our end-to-end solutions portfolio, we can quickly support these customers with simple remote email access wherever they are, while meeting the crucial corporate requirements of security, integration and affordability."

As the Prime Integrator for Microsoft Exchange 2000 and the undisputed industry leader in Exchange deployments, no other company is better positioned to serve customers' complete messaging needs. With over six million Exchange seats in North America, Compaq has successfully implemented Exchange in over 500 enterprise customer sites. Compaq also has more than 850 dedicated Exchange Messaging Consultants, along with award-winning Exchange Lifecycle Services available globally.

"This announcement marks the beginning of a partnership between Compaq and RIM that will serve as an important part of both companies' wireless strategies," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-chief Executive Officer, Research In Motion. "BlackBerry has already proven successful in extending the core benefits of Exchange to mobile environments, which is an integral focus of Compaq's commitment to help enterprise customers integrate wireless technology in their work environments."

Availability of BlackBerry through Compaq is expected in the second quarter.

Compaq Aero Wireless Connectivity Suite

Today, Compaq also announced its Aero wireless connectivity suite, which when attached to compatible data-enabled cellular telephones enables end-users to browse the Internet, read and write emails, and send documents to a fax machine. The Aero wireless connectivity suite is available for the Compaq Aero 1500 and 2100 palm-size PCs. The suite includes a connecting cable for the Aero, a Wireless Applications Protocol (WAP) browser, Web browser and fax software.

"By delivering simple wireless email and WAP-enabled browsing, we are carrying through on our promise to redefine the Internet experience - no matter where you are," said Ted Clark, Vice President of iAppliances, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Remote access is not new, but enabling simple wireless connectivity as part of your palm-size PC experience is taken to a new heights level with this suite of products."

Compaq is the first company in the Windows CE market space to offer a WAP-enabled Web browser in a wireless connectivity kit. For customers with compatible phones, the Aero wireless connectivity suite provides an instant wireless data companion for the wireless phone.

Separately, the company unveiled its Mobile Internet Platform, a next-generation mobile commerce solution that incorporates advanced middleware, including WAP technology. The Mobile Internet Platform enables wireless users to trade stocks, make point-of-sale purchases, exchange email and complete business-to-business transactions, no matter where they are. Compaq will demonstrate all these solutions at its booth (#8247, Hall J) at CTIA Wireless 2000 in New Orleans.
