Airtis Provides Two-Way Wireless Application For Real-Time Traffic and Weather Service

Norcross, GA - TransCore, an industry leader in transportation technology services, announced today that its new traveler information division, AIRTIS, released its first traffic and weather application for the RIM 850 Wireless Handheld™ from Research In Motion Limited (Nasdaq: RIMM, TSE: RIM). The application integrates the two-way communications device with the Web and real-time traffic and weather services. AIRTIS' services will be offered over Motient's (NASDAQ: MTNT) eLinkSM wireless email service, which uses the RIM 850.

"We are excited about the future of AIRTIS and the wireless data market," said Scot Love, director of AIRTIS. "Wireless technology is enabling information to be more productive and more commonplace. AIRTIS, matched with RIM's new two-way handhelds and Motient eLinkSM service, is an excellent example of these enabling technologies."

AIRTIS is an advanced traveler information system that provides real-time intelligent information services for business and personal use by the traveling public as well as the wireless and Internet industries. It integrates real-time traffic and weather information into services that utilize wireless and other emerging information delivery technologies. Its services can be accessed through the World Wide Web (www.airtis.com) and via two-way wireless devices, such as the RIM 850, which allow subscribers to customize the service for their individual needs.

"The real-time travel information provided by AIRTIS is the type of value-added content that will make eLinkSM all the more attractive," said Brian Nimmo, vice president of marketing for Motient. "We believe that by combining significant content with the reach and reliability of our wireless data network we will be well positioned to serve the mobile professional."

The traffic service is currently provided in six market areas, including Atlanta, Georgia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Seattle, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and San Francisco, California. AIRTIS is in the process of expanding its services to most major metropolitan areas, including 15 new cities within the next few months. These cities include: Knoxville, Tennessee; Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota; San Antonio and Houston, Texas; New York, New York; San Diego and Los Angeles, California; and Lexington, Virginia.

As the AIRTIS traffic system expands to additional cities, subscribers will be able to select a variety of destination cities to receive high-quality local traffic news. AIRTIS utilizes incident reports, roadway status, and speed data. By using the AIRTIS Web interface, subscribers can select the times and days of the week and the traffic severity for which they wish to receive traffic alerts.

AIRTIS' weather service is currently providing weather information for every county within the United States. Subscribers can receive real-time weather information continuously throughout the day, notifying them of all significant weather alerts (e.g., tornado warnings, snow and ice conditions, etc.) for specified areas. The service also provides customized weather forecasts. When weather advisories or alerts are issued, subscribers receive a notification on their wireless devices that a weather statement has been issued. The severe weather alerts are sent as they are issued. Subscribers can receive 24- to 36-hour forecasts, and can specify up to 10 counties for weather alerts and forecasts.

"The time-sensitive and valued information supplied by the AIRTIS service coupled with the 'Always On, Always Connected™' capability of the RIM 850 Wireless Handheld™ allows mobile customers to receive timely alerts and updates on information that impacts their day," said Mark Guibert, director of marketing for Research In Motion. "Wireless email, personal organizer information, and customized Web content, such as local traffic and weather alerts, add significant flexibility and convenience for RIM 850 users."

The RIM 850 Wireless Handheld™ is smaller than a billfold and features a high quality display screen and easy-to-use keyboard. The RIM 850 operates on a single regular or rechargeable AA battery. The eLinkSM service uses the RIM 850 handheld and operates throughout the United States and Puerto Rico over Motient ARDIS® network, which is the nation's largest terrestrial two-way data network. Motient sells the RIM 850 for $359 with a monthly fee of $59.95 for unlimited messaging or a limited use plan priced at $24.95. AIRTIS traffic and weather service is an additional $9.95 per month.
