RIM / Neomar Alliance Enables Secure Access to Enterprise Applications Using BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds

First Outcome of RIM / Neomar Alliance to Provide Lotus Sametime Everyplace Support for BlackBerry

Las Vegas, NV - Research In Motion® Limited (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSE: RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, and Neomar, Inc., a leading provider of wireless systems management and application delivery software, today announced an expanded strategic alliance in which the companies will offer Fortune 1000 companies the ability to securely access additional enterprise applications via BlackBerry™. BlackBerry already employs an end-to-end security model for wireless email and calendar applications. Today's announcement will enable end-to-end security for a broader range of enterprise applications using the same award-winning BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™ and BlackBerry service.

RIM and Neomar also announced that the first output of this alliance will be support for Lotus Sametime Everyplace using BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™. Lotus Sametime Everyplace is a new product that extends Lotus Sametime's Awareness and Instant Messaging features to mobile devices. Lotus Sametime Everyplace gives mobile workers a way to locate and instantly communicate with connected colleagues, while providing office-based users awareness and access to remote/mobile staff. RIM is demonstrating Lotus Sametime Everyplace with BlackBerry at the Lotus DevCon2001 conference this week in Las Vegas.

"End-to-end security is one of the critical underpinnings of BlackBerry's success in the corporate sector that has already allowed us to deploy the BlackBerry wireless email solution in more than 8,000 organizations. RIM and Neomar will now begin to enable a range of additional wireless applications with continuous encryption at all points between the corporate servers behind firewalls to the BlackBerry handhelds." said Jim Balsillie, Chairman and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "Our first application of this technology will allow support for Lotus Sametime Everyplace which means that BlackBerry customers will be able to manage their instant messaging as well as their email and organizer from a single wireless handheld."

"Neomar and RIM are committed to delivering wireless end-to-end solutions, such as Lotus Sametime Everyplace on BlackBerry, that help Fortune 1000 companies become more efficient and competitive," said William "Butch" Winters, Neomar's CEO. "By adding Neomar's software for secure, high-performance delivery of mission-critical data, BlackBerry becomes an even more powerful tool for enabling corporate users to make wireless their competitive advantage."

The RIM / Neomar solution will enable secure wireless access to enterprise applications through integration of devices, server software and wireless service:

  1. BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds include built-in software that allow users to stay connected to their existing email account and organizer applications. Neomar's microbrowser software will also run on the BlackBerry handheld to enable secure WML access to enterprise data and applications.
  2. BlackBerry Enterprise Server software provides tight integration with corporate email systems and manages a secure link between corporate email systems and BlackBerry handhelds. Neomar Enterprise Server software will provide for secure access to enterprise data and applications from BlackBerry handhelds. Both BlackBerry Enterprise Server and Neomar Enterprise Server reside inside corporate firewalls and enable end-to-end security between corporate servers and BlackBerry handhelds.
  3. BlackBerry Wireless Service operates over nationwide wireless data networks and connects BlackBerry handhelds with BlackBerry Enterprise Server software. The BlackBerry service will also incorporate Neomar's Secure Enterprise Router Proxy to allow the Neomar WML browser (running on BlackBerry handhelds) to connect wirelessly and securely to Neomar Enterprise Server software.
