Motient Network Wirelessly Enables IBM's Customer Service

IBM Printing Systems Division Equips 1,400 Customer Service Engineers with Enhanced Mobile Communications Resulting in Increased Productivity and Cost Savings

Reston, VA - Motient Corporation (NASDAQ: MTNT) today announced that IBM (NYSE: IBM)is deploying 1,400 of the palm-size RIM 857 Wireless Handhelds™ on the Motient network. The deployment of the 857s to their customer service engineers is a continuation of an eight-year relationship Motient has built with IBM across its many divisions, including Printing Systems. IBM continues to be one of Motient's largest and most strategic partners.

IBM has written its own software application for the RIM 857 that makes it possible to wirelessly accomplish a variety of tasks including the ability to receive service alerts, provide project status reports, file accounting reports throughout the day, and order parts while at a client site.

"Our business relies on being highly responsive to the needs of our customers," said Dennis Sundberg, Senior Program Manager of the IBM Printing Systems Division. "During the time I have worked with Motient we have never had a system failure. Motient has been rock solid for more than five years."

IBM's engineers will also be able to correspond with customers on their way to the service location. Through IBM's website, customers can find out which CE is en route to their location, and email him/her directly with requests or updates. This enables customers to alert CEs if they need to cancel their order or if the service need has become more critical. A type of "live chat" is then formed with the technician. Managers and select CE groups will have added ability to wirelessly email and receive pages.

"Over the years, IBM has found that our network exceeds all expectations and provides a level of reliability second to none," said Mike Fabbri, vice president of sales for Motient Corporation. "This network reliability coupled with our customer service has heavily contributed to the success of our long-term relationship with IBM, and continues to be a deciding factor when they review new solutions."

In addition to reliability, the Motient/IBM solution has reduced costs for the Printing Systems Division. Rather than updating laptops with expensive software, CEs are able to carry small, palm-sized units. The cost of call center support and cell phone usage also decreased because more correspondence is conducted wirelessly over the network and via the Web. "Because of the performance of the Motient network and the RIM 857s, IBM PSD has significantly enhanced the capabilities of its CEs to support their customers," continued IBM's Sundberg.
