Port of Seattle Police Department Armed With Aether PocketBlue™ Wireless Handhelds for Security Protection at Seattle Airport and Harbor
PocketBlue Allows Port of Seattle Police Department To Query Criminal Databases From Any Location To Enhance Homeland Security Efforts
Owings Mills, MD - Aether Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: AETH), a leading provider of wireless data products and services, announced today that the Port of Seattle Police will use PocketBlue, Aether's handheld application for mobile law enforcement, to enhance security efforts at both Seattle-Tacoma International Airport as well as the Seattle Seaport. PocketBlue will allow over 100 law enforcement personnel to query criminal information from federal, state and local databases, with responses returned in seconds to officers located anywhere in the airport or the Seattle seaport.
"The safety and security of citizens and travelers in both our airport and at our seaport, are of extreme importance to our department. Protecting them is our highest priority," said Captain John Holman, Port of Seattle Police Department "Our working environment requires officers to leave the patrol car and interact with people on foot. Only through a handheld device can an officer in the field maintain unified data communications. A tenant of community policing is to get the officer out of the car and interacting with the people. This tool will afford the beat officer data connectivity previously available only over a Mobile Data Terminal in a vehicle. We feel tools such as PocketBlue are integral to our overall safety practices and will enhance communication infrastructure."
The Port of Seattle police will use PocketBlue on RIM 957 devices to query the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and other state and local law enforcement and driver information databases, over secure wireless networks. In addition, the mobility of PocketBlue allows the officer to work right at the scene in the airport or around the docks. Officers can also exchange e-mail and other data messages.
"Because of the unique operating environment of airport and costal patrol operations, the wireless data communications provided by Aether Systems, Inc. can in effect serve as a command and control infrastructure for airport and coastal security, said Mike Mancuso, Aether Systems Group President. "Aether wireless data services and applications are built to support large numbers of users per communications channel while facilitating information sharing via multiple databases."
