BlackBerry Success As mm02 Wins 250 Mobile Data Corporate Customers
mmO2 today announced that it has now signed up more than 250 corporate customers for the BlackBerry™ mobile email solution since its introduction in the UK last Autumn and commercial launch in Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland last month.
BlackBerry, developed and manufactured by Research In Motion (RIM) and supplied throughout mmO2's European operating businesses, is experiencing substantial demand from a range of industry sectors. Some of the biggest names in banking, finance, law and IT are attracted to the ability to access at high-speed time-sensitive emails whilst on the move. Many employees spend more than 20 per cent of their working day tied to their desk dealing with e-mail.
Kent Thexton, chief marketing and data officer, mmO2, said: "More than 13,200 companies across North America have signed up to use BlackBerry since its launch by RIM in 1999. In just five months, a similar growth path is beginning to appear in Europe as banks and law firms, in particular, seek to replicate the benefits enjoy by their colleagues on Wall Street and in Manhattan.
"mmO2 already supplies BlackBerry to more than half of all law firms located within the City of London and a large number of blue-chip banks, finance houses and IT firms. There has been a very high take up following trials."
In addition, mmO2 today announced that it has established a strong reseller channel by signing agreements with eight independent mobile partners in the UK to supply BlackBerry. Advance Visual Communications, Elcom, Expansys, Lynx Technology, MoboTel, Project Telecom, PNC Telecom and Wireless Logic will augment the UK business's in-house team of experienced sales specialists and its existing agreement with BT's salesforce.
BlackBerry is a secure, integrated wireless email solution for mobile professionals which provides always-on access to corporate email accounts using high-speed GPRS (2.5G) mobile networks. Among features unique to the BlackBerry are its single mailbox integration with the corporate email system so that users have a direct, 'always on' link to their email inbox and 'push' technology that means that emails are sent directly to the user - there is no need to dial in to retrieve messages. It also offers end-to-end encryption of messages providing a very high level of security. mmO2 is the first European mobile operator to market a handheld solution of this calibre in four European markets - the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland and Germany.
mmO2
mmO2 has 100% ownership of mobile network operators in four countries: the UK (BT Cellnet), Germany (Viag Interkom), the Netherlands (Telfort Mobiel), and Ireland (Digifone). Additionally it has operations on the Isle of Man (Manx Telecom) and a leading mobile internet portal business, Genie.
mmO2 was the first company in the world to launch and rollout a commercial GPRS (or 2.5G) network and has secured third generation mobile telephony ("3G") licences in the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany. mmO2 also expects to apply for a 3G licence in Ireland, where the licence competition was launched on 18 December 2001.
mmO2 has approximately 17.25 million customers and over 15,000 employees, with revenues for the year ended 31 March 2001 of £3.2 billion. Data represented 12.8% of total service revenues in the quarter ending December 31, 2001.
