Bell Mobility launches RIM's BlackBerry 6750 with built-in cellphone

Bell Mobility is now offering the data and voice-enabled BlackBerry 6750 handheld from Research In Motion on its CDMA 1X wireless network. Bell Mobility is the first Canadian CDMA service provider to offer the new BlackBerry 6750, which features the wireless e-mail access that users have come to appreciate with blackberry handhelds, as well as cellphone, text messaging, browser and organizer functionality all in a single handheld device.

"The addition of a cellphone to the already-popular BlackBerry handheld device addresses a strong demand from our customers," said Michael A. Neuman, President, Bell Mobility. "The combination of Bell Mobility's 1X wireless network, leading wireless enterprise applications, and one of the most popular wireless devices on the market today, provides our customers with both a product and service that can dramatically enhance business communications and productivity."

Features of the BlackBerry 6750 for Bell Mobility customers include:

  • a built-in, dual band cellphone that supports standard voice features such as call waiting and call forwarding;
  • an integrated speaker/microphone designed for comfort and clarity when held to the ear and a headset that attaches for convenient, hands-free conversation allowing users to read, type or retrieve information while they talk;
  • secure access to e-mail inbox and enterprise applications;
  • always-on data operation, meaning users don't need to retrieve email as the BlackBerry 6750 always stays connected to the network allowing users to be discreetly notified as e-mails arrive;
  • two-way text messaging enables users to easily send and receive text messages;
  • Mobile Browser access, Bell Mobility's wireless Internet service.

Specifically designed to meet the needs of both end users and IT departments, BlackBerry incorporates industry leading hardware, software and services. The BlackBerry 6750 uses RIM's advanced technologies and infrastructure together with Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) and other1X capabilities, providing customers with a compelling wireless experience.

Migration to 1X Network

After careful study, Bell Mobility has decided to migrate all of its existing RIM customers from the older IP network, ARDIS, to Bell Mobility's 1X next generation wireless network, which is faster, more robust, secure, versatile, and adaptable to customer needs. Bell Mobility invests more than $200 million annually to increase capacity and enhance the capacity of its digital wireless network. The migration will take place over the next 12 months and customers will be contacted by Bell Mobility in stages throughout the year as the migration process is completed. Existing RIM 857 and 850 handhelds will not work on the 1X wireless network, as a result, Bell Mobility will provide customers with the opportunity to exchange their current RIM device for the new BlackBerry 6750 during the migration period. Bell Mobility's ARDIS network, which currently serves RIM 857 and 850 subscribers and vertical customers, will continue to provide service until the end of the year, at which time Bell Mobility will discontinue ARDIS service. Bell Mobility paging customers will not be affected by the migration.
