EarthLink Pilots Wireless Email With BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds
EarthLink Airmanager™ featuring BlackBerry™ Lets Customers Access Email Everywhere
Atlanta and Waterloo, Ontario - EarthLink, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNK), the nation's second largest Internet Service Provider (ISP), has begun a market test of EarthLink Airmanager™ , a wireless service featuring BlackBerry Internet Edition™ from Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSE: RIM). EarthLink Airmanager allows EarthLink members to send and receive email messages using the BlackBerry wireless email solution. Airmanager is the first product to be offered by the company's newly launched product group, EarthLink Everywhere, an initiative to develop and introduce wireless Internet services to EarthLink's existing member base.
"Our members check their email an average of five times a day," said Tom Andrus, vice president of product management for EarthLink. "EarthLink Airmanager represents a significant innovation for EarthLink members who are increasingly dependent on email. Whether it's access to check email via their computer, wireless handheld, wireless phones, or any portable handheld device, we're giving our members yet another way to access their EarthLink email account everywhere they go."
The EarthLink Airmanager service featuring BlackBerry allows EarthLink members to read, forward, reply to and originate email messages -- all via wireless technology -- using their existing EarthLink email address. BlackBerry uses a "push" method of email delivery so messages are automatically routed to the wireless handheld without any effort required by the user. The award-winning BlackBerry Wireless Handheld™ features an optimized display, fully functioning keyboard, thumb-operated trackwheel and an intuitive interface, making it easier to use than most electronic organizers. An integrated suite of applications also provides a personal organizer with PC synchronization software, message filtering capabilities, and back-up utilities.
"Today, people are tied to their laptops, or even their desktop PCs to check their email -- but not for long," Andrus continued. "In fact, if a business traveler carries a laptop only to check email, this five-ounce device will be a marvel."
"Email has become an extremely important method of communication in people's lives and wireless email service is a natural progression for leading Internet service providers such as EarthLink," said David Werezak, vice president of marketing at Research In Motion. "Through this pilot program, EarthLink will be able to provide their customers with the same wireless email experience that is generating praise and awards for BlackBerry."
The pilot is open to existing EarthLink members, but will be limited to 500 members. The service will cost $34.95 per month for unlimited email messaging, which includes lease of the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld. Complete information regarding the service and how members can qualify for the test is available on the company's Web site: http://www.earthlink.net/wireless/airmanager.
