BT Cellnet Extends Its Business GPRS Range With BlackBerry Wireless Email

Customers can now place advance orders for the highly-popular BlackBerry running over BT Cellnet's GPRS

BT Cellnet, the UK mobile business of BT wireless, today announced that Research In Motion's (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSE: RIM) BlackBerry wireless email solution can now be ordered by corporate customers.

BlackBerry will run over BT Cellnet's GPRS, enabling users to be always connected to their business email account and to receive, read and respond to messages, wherever they are. BlackBerry is developed and manufactured by RIM and has already proved hugely popular in North America, where it was launched in 1999.

The Enterprise Edition of BlackBerry is the world's first complete, secure and integrated wireless email service developed for businesses. It uses unique 'push' technology that enables users to access emails automatically without the need to dial in. It also integrates with a user's existing email account so that there is no need for a second address.

In a deal with BT Cellnet, BlackBerry will run in the UK on the GPRS data network which runs alongside the existing GSM network. GPRS will enable BlackBerry users to stay connected to their corporate network all day.

BT Cellnet launched its GPRS network to corporate users in June 2000, and to consumers in May 2001. BlackBerry joins a growing range of GPRS services developed for the business market which deliver fast and an "always on"* connection for mobile workers.

"With BlackBerry, you are never away from your email," David McGlade, BT Cellnet's managing director, commented. "Many workers dread returning to the office after meetings, as unread emails can accumulate rapidly. With BlackBerry you can deal with them as they arrive, dealing immediately with urgent tasks and staying on top of work in progress."

Jim Balsillie, chairman and co-CEO for Research In Motion, said, "The combination of BlackBerry and BT Cellnet's GPRS network represents a landmark in the development of wireless email solutions for the UK market. With the growing trend towards mobile and flexible working, there is an increasing need for productivity tools such as BlackBerry that enable people to keep in touch and manage their growing email inbox."
