CA and Research In Motion Team to Extend Management and Use of Wireless Handhelds For Enterprise Customers
Dual Initiative Enables Enterprise Customers to Manage BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™ and Use BlackBerry For Mobile Administration of IT Infrastructures
CA World, FL and Waterloo, ON - Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA), the world's leading provider of eBusiness management solutions, and Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSE: RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today announced an agreement to enhance CA's Unicenter to provide enterprise-class manageability of RIM's BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™ as well as to enable IT staffs to utilize BlackBerry handhelds to wirelessly manage their IT infrastructures.
Unicenter, CA's industry-leading eBusiness Infrastructure Management solution, provides a comprehensive family of integrated, modular solutions that empower businesses of all sizes to achieve their infrastructure management objectives. BlackBerry™ is an end-to-end wireless email solution featuring advanced wireless handheld devices, desktop utilities, enterprise server software, end-to-end security and tight integration with wireless packet-data networks.
The collaboration announced today will extend CA's infrastructure management solution to include the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and enable IT administrators to track BlackBerry handhelds like any other IT asset - effectively enabling them to deploy, manage and support the installation and upgrade of BlackBerry applications, files and operating systems.
"As mobile devices are becoming more prevalent in eBusiness, it's becoming increasingly important to manage them in a similar fashion as the rest of the corporate infrastructure," said David Hochhauser, vice president of marketing, infrastructure solutions, CA. "The BlackBerry handheld is a prime example of such an indispensable business tool, which is why CA is so excited about the opportunity that this agreement provides for addressing the needs of today's mobile professionals."
CA's partnership with RIM is an outgrowth of CA's strategic mobile eBusiness initiative, which enables rapid and secure deployment, management and integration of enterprise applications for wireless systems and devices.
"CA is a leader in enterprise management and this initiative helps expand the value of our solution to enterprise customers who view BlackBerry as an important component of their overall IT strategy," said Mark Guibert, vice president of Brand Management at Research In Motion. "Through the integration of Unicenter with BlackBerry, expanded functionality will be provided to corporate IT departments, including both asset management and wireless administration of IT infrastructures."
In addition to adding support for BlackBerry to Unicenter, CA and RIM will also enable IT departments to use BlackBerry in their day-to-day administration activities. Today, the pressure to deliver optimal IT services coupled with emerging IT management models encourages administration staff to be increasingly mobile. Building on the advanced visualization already available with Unicenter, administrators will now be able to manage their IT infrastructure even when on the road.
"The BlackBerry handheld enables secure, two-way communications with 'Always On, Always Connected'™ operation, and these handheld characteristics are important for mobile IT administrators that need to monitor systems 24x7," said Guibert. "We are pleased to be working with CA to develop this additional application for BlackBerry in the enterprise."
"With flexibility and rapid turnaround such key requirements for management today, BlackBerry offers an excellent platform on which CA can provide administrators a mobile console for Unicenter," said Hochhauser. "Being in touch and able to carry out administrative tasks at all times will enable IT staffs to solve problems quicker, which will optimize service levels."
