RIM Introduces Wireless Organizer for BlackBerry Enterprise Customers

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Provides 'Always On, Always Connected®' Wireless Email and Calendar

Waterloo, ON - At the CTIA Wireless 2001 (Las Vegas) and FOSE 2001 (Washington, D.C.) shows today, Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSE: RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, will introduce and demonstrate a major breakthrough for connected organizers. BlackBerry™, which quickly became the leading wireless email solution for corporations in North America, will offer the same integrated, wireless experience for calendars. Many people rely heavily on their organizers to plan their day and collaborate with others; but calendar entries can change rapidly and frequently causing discrepancies between online calendars and handheld devices that require a cradle to synchronize. BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers will enjoy a seamless, two-way wireless connection between their online calendar and their BlackBerry Wireless Handheld™. With wireless email and calendar, customers will stay connected to the information that drives their day.

"Wireless connectivity with proper back-end integration will change the way you think about your mobile organizer. In fact, it gives a whole new meaning to the term - 'connected' organizer," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. "Meeting scheduling is a dynamic process that depends on multiple parties. The value of your calendar is highly reliant on your ability to both input and receive timely updates. Wireless calendar synchronization with BlackBerry dramatically improves the scheduling process by providing an automated, two-way, wireless connection to your calendar so that you're always up-to-date."

"Advancements such as wireless email integration and wireless calendar synchronization are changing the rules and raising the bar in the handheld industry. The era of 'unconnected' mobile devices is passing and wireless technology is pivotal to the future of mobile devices and applications," said Jim Balsillie, Chairman and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. "Enterprise customers want to push corporate data to handhelds and they require whole solutions like BlackBerry that leverage the power of wireless while respecting existing IT infrastructure and security requirements."

Is My Calendar Up-To-Date?
The ability to synchronize calendars between PC's and handheld devices is a valued and commonplace feature; but wireless technology provides the ability to evolve the calendar application further. Historically, handheld devices have provided the ability to maintain a static snapshot of the user's online calendar and allow the user to manually input new information in the device calendar; however, any changes to the user's online calendar and device calendar remained isolated until a manual synchronization process occurred. As a result, the user could never feel confident whether their calendar was up-to-date. Meetings may have been cancelled or modified since the last time the device was synchronized. Assistants or colleagues may have requested new meetings. The delayed synchronization also proved problematic for the user's assistant and/or colleagues who remained unaware of changes implemented on the user's device.

BlackBerry Customers Get Maximum Control.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server takes calendars to the next level. With wireless calendar synchronization, BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds exchange calendar events wirelessly and automatically so that the online calendar and handheld calendar are synchronized without need of a cradle. The BlackBerry user enjoys the benefit of an updated handheld calendar and the online calendar is also updated for the benefit of colleagues and assistants trying to schedule new appointments. With BlackBerry, customers get maximum control of their calendar and email.

"Push" Architecture Makes The Difference
BlackBerry is a proven, secure and complete solution that integrates the industry's most advanced wireless handhelds with enterprise server software, end-to-end encryption technology, desktop utilities and nationwide wireless networks. A unique and compelling element of the BlackBerry solution is its "push" architecture. With industry-leading wireless performance and battery life, BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds are able to remain "on" and "connected" to the wireless network 24 hours per day. This continuous operation, combined with the power of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, allows information to be "pushed" to the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld. Whenever an email or meeting request arrives at the corporate server, the information is automatically updated on the handheld. Similarly, email messages and meeting requests initiated using the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld are automatically delivered over the wireless network.
