Research In Motion and VoiceStream Sign Supply Agreement For BlackBerry Wireless Email Solution
Waterloo, ON - Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSE: RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today announced a supply agreement to provide the BlackBerry™ wireless email solution to VoiceStream Wireless Corporation, a leading provider of personal communications services in the United States. Under the terms of the agreement, VoiceStream has committed to purchase BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™ with associated software and service for distribution throughout their nationwide service area. The handhelds will operate on VoiceStream's GSM/GPRS network.
BlackBerry is an end-to-end solution that quickly became the corporate standard for wireless email in North America. Over 12,000 organizations across North America already use BlackBerry, and RIM recently began marketing BlackBerry to customers in Europe. VoiceStream operates the largest digital wireless network in North America based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile) communications technology platform. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is an extension of the GSM network architecture that converts wireless data into standard Internet packets, enabling interoperability between the Internet and the GSM network.
Details of the transaction were not disclosed. Further information regarding the availability of BlackBerry for VoiceStream's GPRS network will be announced at a later date.
