BEA Systems and Research In Motion Mobilize Web Services
BEA and RIM Form Strategic Relationship to Provide Framework for Bringing Web Services to BlackBerry Users
San Jose, CA and Waterloo, ON - BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure software company, and Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM, TSE: RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today announced their strategic relationship to deliver a framework that eases the development and delivery of mobile enterprise Web Services applications for the thousands of organizations using BlackBerry™.
BEA and RIM plan to jointly deliver a simple and flexible framework for developing and deploying mobile Web Services on the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform™. The goal is to bring BEA's groundbreaking integrated development framework, BEA WebLogic Workshop™, and the unique characteristics of BlackBerry together in a single solution to support an always-on, push-based architecture with end-to-end security and back-end integration to corporate systems. The framework is intended to extend the power of Web Services application development to provide independent software vendors (ISVs) and in-house corporate developers with a powerful solution for mobilizing enterprise Web Services.
"We are collaborating with BEA to develop and deliver a framework that leverages the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform technology and the BlackBerry architecture to simplify and speed the development of enterprise Web Services," said David Yach, vice president, software, Research In Motion. "The creation of this framework is intended to enable ISVs and enterprise customers to easily develop mobile applications and allow carriers to offer new services for BlackBerry users."
The purpose is to combine BEA WebLogic Workshop and BlackBerry to enable enterprise and application developers to work on the same code base and collaborate on the same development projects - standardizing on a single, unified architecture. BEA and RIM plan to help enable IT organizations to dramatically increase operational efficiency and boost developer productivity across their entire organization.
"BEA is the first vendor to bring the power of J2EE and Web Services to developers at virtually all levels with the ease-of-use and support for open standards that BEA WebLogic Workshop delivers," said Adam Bosworth, vice president of engineering, BEA Systems. "With this relationship, our goal is to enable enterprises to integrate all their applications on top of a unified, simplified, extensible - and mobile - application infrastructure platform."
Web Services enable distributed computing on the Internet by providing a standard for applications written in different languages and platforms to interact. A wireless application using Web Services can, for example, aggregate information from different sources to provide a mobile sales force with complete customer-related data such as credit ratings, current order status and driving directions to client locations.
