Nextel and RIM Announce Enterprise Java Developer Contest for BlackBerry 6510
JavaOne Conference - San Francisco, CA - Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:NXTL) and Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) have launched The BlackBerry 6510 Extensibility Challenge (http://developer.nextel.com), a Nextel Enterprise Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) developer contest. The contest is designed to encourage the development of the most compelling J2ME technology-enabled applications to meet the demands of Nextel and RIM business subscribers.
The BlackBerry 6510 Extensibility Challenge is open to independent software vendors (ISVs) and developers that can build and support applications that leverage the Mobile Data Service feature of BlackBerry Enterprise Server and run on Nextel's iDEN network. The contest will focus on enterprise applications for key vertical segments including: transportation & logistics; financial & insurance; manufacturing & distribution; government/public sector and higher education; and utilities. With Nextel's leading wireless business solutions platform, developers can write applications to increase business productivity and meet the workplace demands of Nextel's subscribers. Nextel continues to be a leader in North America in the adoption of wireless data services with more than 20 percent of its domestic customer base - or more than 2.5 million Nextel customers - using Nextel's nationwide IP data network.
"As the first carrier in the U.S. to deliver Java technology-enabled handsets and a high wireless data penetration among our subscribers, the timing is right to focus on delivering J2ME applications to the enterprise on the BlackBerry 6510 from Nextel," said Blair Kutrow, vice president, product management, Nextel. "This contest reinforces our commitment to providing business customers with best-in-class wireless solutions, which operate on Nextel's nationwide packet data network."
Java technology enables developers to write advanced applications for the BlackBerry 6510 from Nextel that take advantage of the rich user interface, persistent memory, and ability to run select J2ME applications while in or outside of network coverage. Plus, Java allows companies to easily customize the applications they want for BlackBerry handhelds. Java technology also enhances Nextel's services, including Direct Connect, the digital two-walkie-talkie feature; digital cellular; text and numeric messaging; and Wireless Web access.
"We implemented J2ME in our advanced BlackBerry handhelds in order to provide a powerful, industry-standard development environment," said Mark Guibert, vice president, brand management, Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry 6510 Extensibility Challenge will help to promote the development of compelling wireless applications for our corporate customers."
Completed applications must be submitted by August 1, 2003. Three finalists will be invited to attend an awards ceremony to be held at Nextel's Center of Excellence in Reston, VA where they can present their applications to Nextel and RIM judges. Contestants will compete for the distinction of the title "Nextel's Enterprise J2ME Application Contest Winner of 2003," BlackBerry handhelds, the opportunity to showcase their application at the ceremony and other prizes. Entry application and contest rules can be found by visiting http://developer.nextel.com or http://www.blackberry.net/developers/na/programs/contest.shtml.
