AIS And Research In Motion Introduce the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 Smartphone In Thailand
Bangkok, Thailand - AIS and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced availability of the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8120 smartphone to Thai customers. Designed to meet the needs of mobile consumers in Thailand, the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone comes with a range of new and innovative features including built-in Wi-Fi®, a 2-megapixel digital camera that supports video capture, an externally accessible memory card slot and an enhanced visual interface.
Available on AIS’s high-speed EDGE network, the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone offers AIS customers an exceptional user experience for email, phone, messaging (SMS, IM, MMS), web browsing, multimedia, organizer and other mobile applications.

Key features of the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone include:
- A 2-megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and enhanced flash, as well as video capture* in two resolutions: 240x180 or 176x144 for sharing via MMS.
- Ultra-sleek design, measuring only 107mm x 55mm x 14mm and weighing approximately 91g.
- Exceptional user experience with RIM’s popular trackball navigation system and SureType® keyboard system, as well as an updated visual interface.
- National and international support with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and built-in Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) with support for Wi-Fi security protocols including WEP (Wireless Equivalency Protocol), WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) and WPA2.
- BlackBerry Desktop Manager software that includes Roxio® Media Manager for BlackBerry®, which allows users to easily search for media files on their computer, view and organize them, create MP3 music files from CDs, add audio tags and album art, create playlists and copy or convert pictures, music and videos for optimal playback. Users can also create and edit playlists through the media player on the smartphone.
- Premium phone features including noise cancellation technology to offset background noise, Speaker Independent Voice Recognition (SIVR) for Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), dedicated 'send', 'end', and 'mute' keys, low-distortion speakerphone, and Bluetooth® (2.0) support for hands-free use with headsets, car kits, stereo headsets and other Bluetooth peripherals.
- An externally accessible microSD/SDHC expandable memory slot for additional storage, and support for high-speed USB allowing users to transfer files between the smartphone and a PC at up to 10MB/sec.
- A 3.5mm stereo headset jack and dedicated volume controls.
- Support for polyphonic, mp3 and MIDI ringtones.
- Built-in spell checker.
- BlackBerry® Internet Service support that allows access to up to 10 supported personal and corporate email accounts, including most popular ISP email accounts.
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server support for enterprise deployments, enabling advanced security and IT administration within IBM® Lotus® Domino®, Microsoft® Exchange and Novell® GroupWise® environments.
- Support for instant messaging with BlackBerry® Messenger, Google® Talk and Yahoo!® Messenger.
AIS launched the BlackBerry solution in Thailand in 2005. The BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone from AIS is now available for 19,990 Baht. BlackBerry service plans are available from 299 Baht per month. Customers who use up to 5MB of data a month can now purchase a data plan from AIS at 599 Baht per month with a 12-month data contract. For customers who travel frequently, AIS also has special data roaming plans, offering discounts of more than 90% off AIS’s normal roaming data rates.
