Display your friend’s barcode

Step 1: Display your contact's barcode

To scan a contact's barcode, they first need to display their barcode on their device. How? It is easy. Just have your contact follow these steps on their smartphone:

  1. On the Home screen or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
  2. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
  3. Click My Profile.
  4. Click Display My Barcode.

Step 2: Scan the barcode into your device

Now you are ready to scan your contact's barcode into your device. Follow these steps on your smartphone:

  1. On the Home screen or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
  2. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
  3. Scan the barcode into your device
  4. Click Invite Contact.
  5. Click Scan a person's barcode.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Hold your device so that all four corners of the other person’s barcode appear on your device screen. Continue to hold the device until you hear the success beep.

Note that your contact might remain in the Pending category until he or she responds to your invitation.

Troubleshooting

If you cannot add a contact using a barcode, try any of the following fixes:

  • If the screen of a device turns off, press the Escape key on your BlackBerry smartphone.
  • If there is a glare on the screen of the device that is displaying the invitation barcode, you might need to move the device away from whatever is causing the glare.
  • Set the device that is displaying the invitation barcode on a flat, level surface. Move the other device about 4 inches (10 cm) above the first device until all four corners of the barcode appear on the screen of the device that is scanning the barcode.

How to share your barcode as a profile picture

What else can you do with barcodes? Try making your BlackBerry Messenger profile scannable from Facebook® or from a discussion forum like one on MyBlackBerry. That way many people can scan your profile into their BlackBerry Messenger contact lists. (Just be sure you are comfortable with publicly sharing your profile.)

You can do this by sharing your barcode as a profile picture. Just as you might have your own picture connected to your profile, you can share the barcode image for others to download or scan directly off their computer screens. Follow these steps:

To save your barcode:

  1. On the Home screen or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
  2. On the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
  3. Click My Profile.
  4. Click Display My Barcode.
  5. Go into the Menu and click Save Barcode Image.
  6. Wherever it is saved, go in that folder and email it to yourself and then save it to your computer's desktop.

To post your barcode as your profile picture at MyBlackBerry:

  1. Sign in (or register) to my.blackberry.com.
  2. In MyBlackBerry, click on your name in the top left-hand corner.
  3. Under your profile picture (the large one) click Add A Profile Picture of Yourself.
  4. Click Browse and select your barcode image.
  5. Click Save.

That’s all there is to it!
