Tips & Tricks: Bluetooth Connection Secrets Revealed

Bluetooth is the little technology that connects you to the world

Bluetooth®, the short-range wireless technology built into your BlackBerry® smartphone, lets you connect your smartphone to Bluetooth devices like wireless headsets, hands-free car kits, the BlackBerry® Music Gateway, or the BlackBerry® Presenter.

Connecting to a Bluetooth device is generally easy and automatic. Follow these tips to get started.

How to set up Bluetooth connections

To connect your BlackBerry smartphone to a Bluetooth device, you must:

  1. Step 1: Turn on Bluetooth technology on your BlackBerry smartphone and the Bluetooth device.
  2. Step 2: Pair the two devices. Pairing establishes a relationship between your BlackBerry smartphone and the device; it usually needs to be done only once.
  3. Step 3: Connect to a paired Bluetooth-enabled device. After you have paired the two devices, you can then connect to the Bluetooth device when it is within range of your BlackBerry smartphone (a typical range is within approximately 32 feet/10 meters).

Step 1: Turn on Bluetooth technology

  1. On the Home screen of your BlackBerry smartphone, click the Manage Connections icon.
  2. Select the Bluetooth check box.
  3. To power on the Bluetooth device, follow the instructions that came with it.

Step 2: Pair with the Bluetooth device

  1. On the Home screen, click the Manage Connections icon.
  2. Click Set Up Bluetooth.
  3. Click Search.
  4. In the search results, click the Bluetooth device to which you wish to connect.
  5. If necessary, perform one of the following actions:
    • If the Bluetooth device does not have a keyboard (for example, a headset), then type into your BlackBerry smartphone the pairing passkey found in the device's instructions. The passkey is most often a numeric or alpha-numeric code (0000 for example).
    • If the Bluetooth device has a keyboard (for example, a laptop), type a pairing passkey of your own choosing on both devices.

Step 3: Connect to a paired Bluetooth enabled device

  1. On the Home screen, click the Manage Connections icon.
  2. Click Bluetooth Options.
  3. Highlight the Bluetooth device.
  4. Press the Menu key.
  5. Click Connect.

Bonus tip: For best results, keep your BlackBerry smartphone within direct line of sight of the Bluetooth-enabled device. For example, if your smartphone is on the right side of your body, wear your Bluetooth headset in your right ear.
