BlackBerry Messenger v5.0 at Work
To better understand how BlackBerry® Messenger v5.0 can help a business, lets take a look at Alice, a sales manager for a medium-size business to describe the Messenger functions she uses.
As a manager, Alice has to make sure everyone on her team has up to date information concerning meetings, sales data, and client information. Since BlackBerry Messenger is always on and instantaneous, when Alice needs a quick answer, she can see her team members' statuses at a glance, so she knows who's available to answer a quick question. And with BlackBerry Groups, Alice can make as many groups as she wants, and create calendars, schedules, and task lists for each group. She can even assign responsibility and due dates for each task to members of the group, and see instantly when tasks are completed. By creating these groups, Alice allows everyone working on a particular account to see the same information, updated in real time.
New features of BlackBerry Messenger let you:
- Instantly check someone's online status and updates
- Share calendars, tasks, conversations and more with multiple contacts at once
- Create groups to simplify the sharing of information
- Add clients, coworkers or friends by scanning barcodes or sharing PINs
- Send your location (requires a smartphone with GPS capability)
Alice can add people to each group by email address, BlackBerry Messenger PIN, or by using the new barcode feature. To use the barcode, she puts her group barcode on her BlackBerry smartphone screen, and her team members—or client—can scan it with the camera on their BlackBerry® smartphones, and they'll be automatically added to the group. She can also use the barcode feature to add individual users to her BlackBerry Messenger Contacts.
Need to get information out in a hurry? With BlackBerry Messenger's group chat, Alice can send a message to everyone in her group instantaneously, or chat one-on-one with any of the group members. She can check her team members' status and availability, and ping them if she needs answers fast. She can also share files and photos with her groups and contacts, and everyone can comment on them.
What if Alice wants to talk to Bill, one of her sales associates? Bill is in and out of meetings all day, so he's not always available to chat. One glance at her contact list and Alice can see that Bill's status is “In a meeting!” Alice sets an alert on her BlackBerry smartphone, so she knows as soon as he's available.
- On the Home screen or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
- On the contact list screen, in a contact category, highlight an unavailable contact.
- Press the Menu key
- Click Set Alert
- Click OK
BlackBerry Messenger conversations can be saved and labeled, so if Alice needs to share information she's received in a BlackBerry Messenger conversation, she can search her chat history to find the relevant conversation, and send the whole conversation by email. This is particularly useful if she wants to pass on a message to another salesperson.
