Spring cleaning is all about making a fresh start. Here are ten easy ways to keep your BlackBerry® smartphone in peak operating condition.

Sweep away unwanted applications

Have you ever downloaded an app or game that you don't really use or need? Uninstalling/removing apps can allow your BlackBerry to run faster and perform better. If you are using a BlackBerry® ID and later change your mind about the app, you can always go back and download the application again.

For BlackBerry 5 OS or earlier

On the Home screen, highlight an app, press the Menu key and select Delete. A confirmation screen appears for that application with a Delete option to remove it. A restart may be required.

For BlackBerry® 6 OS

On the Home screen, highlight an app, press the Menu key and select Delete A confirmation screen appears for that application with a Delete option to remove it. A restart may be required.

Houseclean your icons

Is your home screen a mess, cluttered with too many icons or icons you no longer want to see? You can easily move them and/or hide them, or organize them in to a folder, by pressing the Menu key and selecting Move, Move to Folder, or Hide. To see the icons you’ve hidden, just press the Menu key and click Show All. Creating separate folders (e.g. kids' games in one folder, productivity apps in another) makes it easier to find things when you need them. To create a folder, press the Menu key and click Add Folder.

Trash old text and email messages

Having text and email messages on your device that aren’t important can consume space and available flash memory.

For BlackBerry 5 OS or earlier

Go to the Home screen, select Messages, press the Menu key, click Options, then select General Options, scroll down to the bottom and set the Keep Messages menu to how long you want your messages kept.

For BlackBerry 6 OS

Go to the Home screen, select Messages, press the Menu key, click Options, then select Message Display and Actions, scroll down to the bottom and set the Days To Keep Messages to how long you want your messages kept.

Dust off those old photos and videos

A very simple way to free up memory on your device is to transfer old photos and/or videos to your computer or to simply delete them. The easiest way to do this is with BlackBerry® Desktop Software.

Empty your Browser's Cache regularly

Your smartphone's web browser keeps information on all sites that you visit in its cache. Clearing the cache regularly can result in better performance.

For BlackBerry 5 OS or earlier

Save power by turning down the lights

Reducing the brightness of your screen by adjusting the backlight settings conserves power and increase your usage time on a single charge.

For BlackBerry 5 OS or earlier

On the Home screen open Options, select Screen/Keyboard, change the Backlight Brightness to a lower number.

For BlackBerry 6 OS

On the Home screen, open Options, select Display then Screen Display, change the Backlight Brightness to a lower number.

Tidy up your contacts

Out-of-date contacts use up memory. To give your smartphone a boost, delete the contacts you’re no longer using.

Clean means the same in every language

Removing Languages is one of the most significant ways to increase the available flash memory on your BlackBerry smartphone.

For BlackBerry 5 OS or earlier

On the Home screen open Setup Wizard, select Languages, select the language you want to use on the BlackBerry smartphone and click Next. The BlackBerry smartphone deletes all languages that you do not select.

For BlackBerry 6 OS

On the Home screen open Setup, select Languages, tap Manage Languages to expand the option, select the language you want to use and click Update.

Use shortcuts

Using shortcuts not only allow you to access common features on your BlackBerry smartphone more quickly and easily. Using shortcuts also conserves battery power. For example, when in the Messages folder, click the letter “T” to go to the top of the message you are reading. For more tips and tricks, click here.
