General Information on Daylight Saving Time (DST) Changes

  1. What were the DST rules in Canada, the United States, and Mexico before 2007?
Prior to 2007, DST in North America began on the first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.

  2. What are the new DST rules in Canada and the United States?
DST now begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

  3. What are the affected time periods in 2007?
The affected dates range from March 11th to April 1st, and from October 28th to November 4th. During these periods, a wide range of businesses, products, and services will be affected. This issue is not exclusive to Research In Motion (RIM) or BlackBerry® solutions.

  4. Should the DST Patches still be applied after March 11th, 2007?
Yes, you should continue applying any related patches you could not complete before March 11th, 2007 as per the recommendations on the website. If you apply the Device patch after March 11th it will automatically update the Date/Time on the device to account for the earlier Daylight Saving Time transition as well so instead of users manually changing the time if they have not applied the patch before March 11th they should instead just install the patch.

Impact on the BlackBerry Device Calendar

  1. Will appointments on the BlackBerry device Calendar be affected?
Yes, appointments with a start date falling within any affected periods may be displayed incorrectly.

  2. Which of my appointments may be affected?
The affected appointments (that may be displayed incorrectly) are any single or recurring appointments that start within the affected periods.

  3. Could a recurring appointment beginning last year during the affected periods (using the old DST rules) be displayed incorrectly?
Yes, recurring appointments with a start date falling within any affected periods (including previous years’ affected periods) may be displayed incorrectly. All instances of this appointment may be displayed incorrectly throughout the entire year.

For example, an appointment starting 30 October 2006 and recurring through 2007 will appear one hour ahead for every instance of that appointment throughout the year, not just during affected periods.

Note: This may also be a problem after the DST 2007 upgrade is installed on the BlackBerry device.

  4. What happens when my BlackBerry device synchronizes the Calendar with my email client? What if my BlackBerry device synchronizes with my computer calendar through BlackBerry Desktop Manager?
In both of these scenarios, appointments and reminders for these appointments may be displayed incorrectly on the BlackBerry device if the appointments occur within the affected periods.

  5. What is the potential impact on calendar appointments if the DST upgrades are not applied?
The table below shows what may occur to calendar appointments and reminders for those appointments during the affected period if you do not upgrade all components in your system.

Is the BlackBerry device or computer updated with new DST rules? Is the appointment being viewed on a BlackBerry device that is updated or is not updated? How is the appointment displayed on the BlackBerry device?
Not updated Not updated May be incorrect
Not updated Updated 1 hour behind
Updated Not updated 1 hour ahead
    Updated Updated Correct

Important: For information on the impact of not upgrading, see Risks of not upgrading the BlackBerry environment.

  6. If my BlackBerry device has not been updated, will all of my appointments appear one hour ahead on my BlackBerry device if they start within the affected periods?
No, appointments will only appear one hour ahead if they were created using the new time zone rules on an updated computer or BlackBerry device and are displayed on a BlackBerry device that has not been updated. Appointments that were created on a computer or a BlackBerry device that has not been updated may be displayed at the correct time on a BlackBerry device that has not been updated.

  7. After I update my BlackBerry device, will all of my appointments be displayed correctly if they start within the affected periods?
No, appointments created using the old time zone rules on BlackBerry devices or computers that have not been updated will appear one hour behind in the BlackBerry Calendar. Also, appointments starting within the affected periods that were created on the BlackBerry device before the update was applied will appear one hour behind in the BlackBerry Calendar. Appointments created using the new time zone rules on updated computers and BlackBerry devices will be displayed correctly on the updated BlackBerry device.

  8. Is there a way to make all appointments appear correctly on my BlackBerry device?
Yes, BlackBerry device users can manually change the times of the appointments in the BlackBerry device Calendar to reflect the correct time by recreating the appointments after the update has been installed.

  9. Will my appointments that do not start during the affected periods be displayed correctly?
Yes, changes to DST dates only affect appointments starting within the affected periods.

Impact on the BlackBerry Device Clock

  1. How will DST changes affect the BlackBerry device clock? Will this be an issue after the update has been applied?
Impacted BlackBerry devices in the affected time zones will display the time one hour behind within the affected periods because the clock will not adjust for the new DST rules. If the update is applied before the affected periods, the BlackBerry device will automatically adjust for the new DST rules.

  2. Is there a way to adjust the clock if the update is not installed before the affected periods?
Yes, BlackBerry device users can change the time on the BlackBerry device manually. At the start of each affected period, adjust the clock forward by one hour. At the end of each affected period, adjust the clock one hour ahead. For more information and instructions, see KB10709: 2007 DST changes in Canada and the United States.

Impact to BlackBerry Device Users in Mexico

  1. Mexico is not changing DST dates. How will this affect the BlackBerry device? Should I update the BlackBerry Device Software?
The BlackBerry device clock will display the time correctly without the updates. Also, appointments will be displayed correctly, unless the meeting is scheduled with United States or Canadian-based BlackBerry device users that are affected by the DST change. Meetings with American or Canadian BlackBerry device users may display incorrect times on the BlackBerry device. Updating the BlackBerry Device Software may resolve that problem.

  2. How will the new Mexican time zones affect the BlackBerry device?
The introduction of the new Mexican time zones may cause inconsistencies in the Calendar on the BlackBerry device because these new time zones are not supported by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The new Mexican time zones affected are GMT -7:00 (Chihuahua, La Paz, Mazatlan) and GMT -6:00 (Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey).

Impact to BlackBerry device Users Outside of North America

  1. If I am meeting with Americans or Canadians affected by the DST change, should I update the BlackBerry Device Software?
Meetings with Americans or Canadians affected by the DST change may appear one hour ahead. Installing the updates will resolve that problem.

Resolutions to DST Changes for BlackBerry Devices

  1. Will software updates to resolve this problem be available for the BlackBerry device?
Yes, updates to BlackBerry Device Software are available. For more information, see Resolutions.

  2. How can I obtain the update?
    Patches are now available.
    • Wireless download: In the BlackBerry Browser on the BlackBerry device, go to www.blackberry.com/dst2007 to download the appropriate update automatically based on your BlackBerry Device Software version.
    • Universal Serial Bus (USB) download: Go to www.blackberry.com/dst2007 from an Internet browser on your computer. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable, then download and apply the appropriate update automatically based on your BlackBerry Device Software version.

  3. How can I tell if the update is installed correctly?
In the BlackBerry device Options, select 2007 DST Patch. This will identify whether the update installed successfully or if additional steps are required to complete the download.

  4. Must the DST update be reapplied from the BlackBerry device if I reapply the BlackBerry Device Software?
No it should not be required. If the BlackBerry Device Software is reloaded using Desktop Software v3.6 or higher the patch manager will be preserved and will automatically re-apply the appropriate patch. Users should confirm this is still applied by checking Options - 2007 DST Patch after they reload their Device Software and if this is not present stating the patch is applied then the DST update must be reapplied to the BlackBerry device.

  5. Can I install the updates after DST begins?
To avoid problems with times being incorrectly displayed on the BlackBerry device Calendar and clock, the software upgrades should be applied as soon as possible prior to 2:00 AM on 11 March 2007. The upgrades may be applied after this date, but there may be problems with appointments created before the update is applied.

  6. What if I cannot or do not update my BlackBerry device? Is there anything I can do to fix the problems on my BlackBerry device?
The updates that are provided are not required. However, the clock and the BlackBerry device Calendar may be incorrect by one hour. This can be adjusted manually on the BlackBerry device. For more information and instructions, see KB10709: 2007 DST changes in Canada and the United States.

  7. Will an update be available for BlackBerry devices enabled with BlackBerry Connect software?
BlackBerry devices enabled with BlackBerry Connect software depend on the time provided by the operating system on which it resides. Please contact your device manufacturer for information on available device software updates.

  8. What should I be aware of as an Aliant/Sasktel/MTS subscriber?
If you are a Blackberry 7250 user or IT Administrator on the Aliant, Sasktel, MTS network, please carefully read this page as the DST patch can potentially cause your device to crash. RIM is aware of this issue. Details can be found here. Other Blackberry devices on the Sasktel, Aliant, and MTS network are not affected and the DST instructions on this web site should be followed.

This information is used by both the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for internal time calculations and by the BlackBerry Synchronization Service, which transmits these values to the BlackBerry devices that support this feature.

Important: This script must be applied to enable the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software to support the new DST changes.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 Service Pack 5 or earlier
There are currently no hotfixes planned for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 Service Pack 5 or earlier. Upgrade to a later version to receive the DST updates.

  2. How can a system administrator resolve the DST problem in a Microsoft® Exchange environment?
Run the Set the Send As Permission in Active Directory tool provided by RIM. This is required in order to send messages from the BlackBerry device. After running the tool, install the new CDO version 6.5.7830.0 contained in the Microsoft Exchange 2007 DST update.

Note: For more information, see BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft's Preparing for daylight saving time changes in 2007.

  3. How can a system administrator resolve the DST problem in a Novell® GroupWise® environment?
Administrators must modify the GroupWise time zone definitions maintained by ConsoleOne® with the new DST rules. No other updates to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise are required.

Note: For more information, see BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise.

  4. In what order should a system administrator upgrade the system?
System administrators should upgrade the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution and related components in the following order:
    • On the computer running the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the messaging and collaboration server, upgrade the computer operating system.

    • Run the Set the Send As Permission in Active Directory tool, if required.
    • Apply updates to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
    • Apply updates to the messaging server.
    • Install any additional updates or run any additional tools required by the environment.

  5. How can a system administrator deploy the updates to the BlackBerry devices?
In addition to requiring BlackBerry device users to obtain the updates (see the Resolutions to DST Changes for BlackBerry devices section above), administrators can wirelessly push the update file to all supported BlackBerry devices.

Note: For more information and instructions, see KB12016: How administrators can assign DST upgrades wirelessly to BlackBerry devices.

  6. How can a system administrator confirm how many BlackBerry devices have been updated?
System administrators can use a tool in the BlackBerry Resource Kit called DST2007Query. This tool creates a file that identifies which BlackBerry device users have installed the update and the status of BlackBerry device users that have not yet installed the update.

    Download the DST2007Query tool

  7. When should the system administrator deploy the updates to the BlackBerry devices?
If an administrator chooses to wirelessly push the update file to the BlackBerry devices, the updates should be pushed to small groups of BlackBerry devices in order to avoid any network performance problems. This should be done outside of peak BlackBerry device usage hours.
